Are you a proud parent of a mutt? Would you care to know what your mutt might be?
A simple DNA test can help you determine your dogs' breed composition. There are several different DNA tests for dogs, none of which I have first hand experienced, but know many of our clients have used them with accurate results.
Owners swab the inside of their dog's cheek and then mail it to the company. Within 6 - 10 weeks (ranging), owners find out who really their four legged mutt is.
It would be interesting to see the role these test play in court regarding breed banning and dangerous dog ordinances.
Here they are:
DNA Diagnostic Center: $68.00
Parentage testing, dog breed DNA testing, inherited traits testing, inherited disease testing, DNA profiling
DOG-DNA: $119.95
Prices include lab processing, shipping, handling charges, and the certificate of DNA Breed Analysis
Canine Heritage: $71.95
Covers 100 breeds
AKC DNA Testing: $40
Do you or anyone you know have a dog that has been DNA tested for breed information? Send us your dog's photo and the results, we will use them to run a contest on our blog. Send your information to: info@doglando.com.

2 yr old Doxie needs forever home
The lady that gave up Lilly (later adopted by the Craign's; Romo's Lil'sister) is now giving up her 2 year old Dachshund. Here is more on Ginger, the Dachshund.
"I never imagined that this would happen, but we are forced to find a home for our other dog, Ginger. We moved to a condo from a house and we are gone so much that it has been difficult for her. Also, we are only allowed to have one pet and we have a cat as well. I was unaware of the association's rule regarding pets when we moved in, as we rented directly from the owner who lives out of state and he didn't know about this rule and was fine with both of our animals. I think it would make more sense to keep the kitty as he is used to always being indoors and is fine when we are gone.
Anyway, I thought of you because I know you found Lily a wonderful home and I thought you might know of someone looking for a nice little dog. I hope everything worked out with Lily's new family. I would love to know how she is doing if you do. I still think about her.
Ginger is a two-year-old smooth red dachshund. She is a really great dog. She is well-behaved and completely housetrained. She is a good inside dog, but absolutely loves to run outside and chase lizards, etc. We had a big yard before we moved here that she really loved. I think she would be fine in a condo with walks as long as someone was home most of the time to hang out with her. She is crate trained, but I prefer to use an exercise pen as it is less restrictive. She is a really easy dog. She loves rawhide bones and squeaky toys, is very playful and friendly but usually calm. She has been around cats and will occasionally chase them if they run, but she won't hurt them. She hangs out with our cat all the time. She is good with my son who is nine and all of his friends. She is current on her shots and she is on heartworm and flea preventative. She is a very healthy dog. She is a little bit shy around new people and dogs sometimes, but usually warms up pretty quickly. She has a beautiful, shiny coat and pretty white teeth. She behaves very well for baths. She rides in a car perfectly and really loves to go places. She walks nicely on a leash, unless she sees a lizard or bird, then she pulls a bit. She would be perfect for someone who wants a well-behaved companion and friend."
Ginger is up for adoption through Doglando's Max's Fund Project. Her adoption fee will be $150.
To Schedule a meet and greet, please contact Teena at Info@doglando.com.

Wheel chairs for dogs

When dogs lose the use of their back legs, it is not a disaster! Older dogs, dogs with arthritis, degenerative myelopathy (DM) and nerve, legs, and spinal problems can all render a dog unable to walk and get the exercise they need. The solution is a dog wheelchair. The attractive, easy-to-use wheels support the back legs offering a dog years of happy, healthy life.
A wheelchair can enable your dog to run and play again, get the exercise he (or she) needs, and live a happy, healthy life. Designed to help animals with hip and leg problems including degenerative myelopathy (DM), hip dysplasia, arthritis, paralysis, slipped disc, soreness, spinal and neurological problems, surgical recovery, and more.
A Walkin' Wheels dog wheelchair can be shipped next day, requires only approximate measurements (our cart wizard does all the work), folds flat, comes fully assembled and is adjusted, without tools, to fit your dog, or any other dog. In some cases, such as for animals under 20 lbs or over 100 lbs, some customization may be required.

Training Tips.... Thursday
How do I get my dog to be more comfortable at the vets?
1. Make trips to the vet office just for fun.
2. After many short, fast trips to the vets', ask your vet if you could bring your
dog in for a fake visit... have your dog wait in the room, and reward him/her
for being calm and then leave.
3. Repeat step three until you feel your dog may be ready to have a vet tech come
into the room. Only have the vet tech reward the dog, then leave.
4. Repeat this exercises until your dog is very comfortable with this, and then
have the vet come in and do the same..... reward/present very special treats and
then leave.
5. While you are working on desensitizing your dog to going to the vet, work on
desensitizing him/her to being handled (for check up) at home. You can do this
by conducting fake check ups daily.... especially before feeding time. Purchase
a stethoscope from Toys R Us or a toy shop for kids, and use this to listen to
your dogs breathing, and pulse.
6. Have all members of the family conduct check up routine while one person holds
dog in position.
7. As your dog becomes comfortable with the procedure at home, try and have your
vet or vet tech conduct a short fake check up.... and be sure to jackpot good
behavior by dishing out plenty of yummy treats.
Keep it short, pleasant and use plenty of rewards.

How cool and fun is this.... Shelter going green?
The Humane Society of Silicon Valley in Milpitas, Calif., has opened what it says is the first animal shelter in the United States to earn a LEED (Leadershio in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from teh U.S. Green Building Council.
The 48,000 square foot shelter, called the Animal Community Center, features cage free environments for pets awaiting adoption. It includes many earth-friendly features, such as a solar-energy system expected to generate 40 percent of the center's electricity, an energy-efficient roof, concrete flooring that absorbs and retains heating and cooling, and landscape with native plants. It also used more than 90% of the previous building on site.
This is my ultimate goal for Doglando.... maybe one day we can encorporate a rescue shelter to the list of services.... to be continued.

PawZ.... Disposable rubber dog boots.
Here's a solution for all those pets who gnaw on their paws to the point of making them raw.
Pawz are 100% biodegradable. Designed to go on easily and fit securely without zippers or straps, they fit like socks right over your dogs' paws.
I have actually used this on a dog myself.... this poor dog was suffering from really bad food allergies, and until we had him switched over and transition onto Orijen, we used the PAWZ gloves on all his paws to prevent him from making worse all the open sores and rash from scratching so much.
PAWZ can be found on line at the Pawz shop OR you can always call Doglando your one stop dog shop and we will order them in for you.

Training Tip .... Thursday
How do I introduce our new baby to our dog(s)?
Congratulations on your new addition to the family. Introducing your four legged to your two legged will require some work prior babies arrival as well as much after.
Welcoming a new baby is exciting for your family. Remember when you first brought home your dog or cat? But before you bring your baby home from the hospital, have your partner or friend take home something with the baby's scent (such as a blanket) for your pet to investigate.
When you return from the hospital, your pet may be eager to greet you and receive your attention. Have someone else take the baby into another room while you give your pet a warm, but calm, welcome. Keep some treats handy so you can distract your pet.
After the initial greeting, you can bring your pet with you to sit next to the baby; reward your pet with treats for appropriate behavior. Remember, you want your pet to view associating with the baby as a positive experience. To prevent anxiety or injury, never force your pet to get near the baby, and always supervise any interaction.
Life will no doubt be hectic caring for your new baby, but try to maintain regular routines as much as possible to help your pet adjust. And be sure to spend one-on-one quality time with your pet each day—it may help relax you, too. With proper training, supervision, and adjustments, you, your new baby, and your pet should be able to live together safely and happily as one (now larger) family.
I would strongly recommend prior to your new babies arrival, you look into other options to keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated. Doggy daycare is a great option for those well rounded, social dogs. This will help curb their excessive energy and give them an opportunity to be a dog and run free and away from whinny babies....
Also, look to enroll in an obedience class to spend some quality time with your pet after your new babies arrival.

Why women cry…
A little boy asked his mother, “Why are you crying?” “Because I’m a woman,” she told him. “ I don’t understand,” he said. His mum just hugged him and said, “And you never will.”
Later the little boy asked his father, “Why does mother seem to cry for no reason?” “All women cry for no reason,” was all his dad could say.
The little boy grew up and became a man, still wondering why women cry.
Finally he put in a call to God. When God got on the phone he asked: “God, why do women cry so easily?”
God said:
“When I made the women she had to be special. I made her shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world, yet gentle enough to give comfort. I gave her an inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that many times comes from her children. I gave here a hardness that allows her to keep going when everyone else gives up, and take care of her family thorough sickness and fatigue without complaining. I gave her the sensitivity to love her children under any and all circumstances, even when her child has hurt her very badly. I gave her strength to carry her husband through his faults and fashioned her from his rib to protect his heart. I gave her wisdom to know that a good husband never hurts his wife, but sometimes tests her strengths and her resolve to stand beside him unflatteringly. And finally, I gave her a tear to shed. This is hers exclusively to use whenever it is needed.”
“ You see, my son,” said God, “the beauty of a woman in not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman must be seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart – the place where love resides.”
Here is to all women, and especially those Doglando Mummy Parents who have touched our hearts in the last year.... we will always be with you, and here for you and your dogs.... stay strong, be strong, and live strong.
