Wacky walkr

Have you ever used resistant bands in your work out regimen? Using the same concept, the wacky walkr is a rubber leash that helps correct a strong, determined, lizard hunter of a dog from pulling while on a leash. The concept is simple, to use it is a breeze, and the best part is, it safely, humanely and reliably works to stop and prevent a dog from pulling.

How it works:

Imagine a thick thick thick rubber band, or if you have ever used a resistant band, one of those. Hold each edge of the band and pull in opposite directions. Now, let go! The force/jerk you feel is what the dog would feel every time he/she pulls and then is tugged by you. AND................. you don't feel a thing. Your shoulder is still in place, your wrist is still intact, and your fingers are not leash burnt!

In the arms of an angel

On behalf of Joy..... Team Doglando's newest rescue, is now officially ready for a forever home. These videos are brought to you on behalf of Joy... hoping every dog has a fair opportunity at a second chance in life. Thanks to Foster parents Astrid and Omar, Joy has made a marvelous recovery from a distant, shattered, non-trusting, broken, apart spirit to a dog who now follows her foster family COMPLETELY off leash, in complete trust, with love, joy and devotion. Her marvelous recovery...although still work in progress has allowed her the freedom every dog deserves.

From cowering under the oak trees at Doglando, Joy now runs with the pack; splashing through rain puddles and digging in the beach sand... to join them during nap time... which she never did before.

Contact us at info@doglando.com or 407-574-3160 to meet Joy!

Local veterinarian a hero in the eyes of the homeless

Veterinarian cares for pets of Orlando's homeless

Homeless Sentinel reporter Kate Santich has a story today about a veterinarian who helps the pets of homeless people living in a camp in the woods.

Though some medicine and supplies are donated, veterinarian Anne Scholl Mealey pays for most expenses herself. She'll even transport the animals to her clinic -- the Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital -- for spaying, neutering, dental care and other surgery.

The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that one in every 10 homeless people has a pet — a number that may grow as more families lose their housing in the recession. For many, giving up an animal so the humans can stay in a homeless shelter is not an option.

Dog bowl...... may have been cause of fire

The back of a Bellevue home is in charred ruins after a bizarre fire Sunday afternoon, when the temperatures were in the 70's.

Firefighters could trace the origin to one particular spot on the back deck.

"Investigators were able to narrow it down to one spot," said Lt. Eric Keenan with the Bellevue Fire Department. "But when they looked over that one spot, there's no electrical devices, nothing that would lead to an obvious cause."
BELLEVUE, Wash. - In science class we all learned how a magnifying glass can concentrate sunlight and start a fire. Fire investigators believe a sunlight shining through glass bowl full of water may have done the same thing.

The only thing sitting there was a glass dog bowl, full of water sitting on a wire rack on the wooden deck.

"When you look at that it may have actually had the optical qualities to act as a magnifying glass and under the midday sun start the deck on fire," says Keenan.

Lt. Keenan says he's never seen a house fire start this way before. The sunlight, the water, the glass and the wood decking would have to be aligned perfectly, but it appears that's exactly what happened.

"It's so unusual, it's really not reasonable to ask people to change their behaviors. If this was the cause it was just a really weird set of circumstances."

It was a devastating fire for the homeowners. It caused more than $200,000 worth of damage.

Dry Shampoo:

If your pup resists a regular wash bath you can try this dry shampoo to spot-clean greasy, dirty areas. This should not be substituted for regular groomings.

Ingredients:
1 cup bran, oatmeal or cornmeal

Method:

Place in a warm oven for 5 minutes to warm the grain. Do not allow the grain to burn or be so hot that it is uncomfortable for your pet.
Leave the grain on the cookie sheet (keeping it warm after removing from the oven), and rub the grain into your pets fur using a towel.
Brush treated areas thoroughly until all grain is removed.
Take photos and send them to us.... we promise you will love the way your pet feels and smells, so will they!

Pre K9..... Doglando's new puppy training classes

AA in Dogolgy Plus Pre K9:

Based on our experiences as trainers, we have realized a void in services offered to ensure the healthy development of puppy souls and here is our solution to it: Doglando's Puppy Kindergarten.

Too frequently we see dogs that have matured into either fearful, aggressive, arrogant & pushy, overly submissive, anxious, or nervous dogs because of the lack of positive experiences, proper stimulation, exposure, and consistency through training, enrichment and socialization as a puppy.

We are here to bring out the best in your puppy; to enable him to learn, grow and mature into a stable, confident, mindful and successful young dog upon graduating the Puppy Kindergarten at University of Doglando.

What is Puppy Kindergarten?

- Puppy Kindergarten is a structured learning and development program for puppies between the ages of 8 weeks and 14 weeks old. As part of the 6 week AA in Dogology obedience course, the Pre K9 incorporates real life applications, such as teaching a dog to have their nails clipped, stand on a grooming table, how to ride in a car, sitting politely while you are talking to your neighbors, improving basic manners such as sit, stay, down, recall, leave it, taking things nicely, drop it and settle. We will also be working on simple behaviors such as walking on a leash, responding to doorbells/knocks, and not being pushy/greed y while humans are eating.

Our AA in Doglogy with the Pre K9 option is a 6 week course meets one hour once a week with the entire family for training. In addition, puppies enrolled in this course, will attend doggy daycare on Saturdays for the duration of the 6 week course, allowing us to working with them on enrichment and life skills as listed below.

What does Puppy Kindergarten entail?

Through our unique program:

- Your puppy will be given a consistent opportunity to go potty outside, making potty training a breeze to achieve.
- Your puppy will learn to be handled by humans, setting them up for successful vet visits, greeting people, exposure and socialization towards all kinds of people (men, women, children, elderly, people in uniform, etc).
- Your puppy will be exposed to all kinds of sounds at our facility and neighboring residential communities. For example the noises from delivery & garbage trucks. Part of your puppy’s sound stimulus experiences will include visiting the local hardware stores and exposing them to the fork lifts, banging and stocking of heavy material, both wood and metal
- Your puppy will learn proper traveling habits through field trips to Waterford Lakes, local stores, and back.

- Your puppy will learn to walk on different substrates such as tile, wood, carpet, gravel, and grass. In addition puppies will be exposed to different textures and sense through other forms of tactile conditioning.
- Your puppy will learn to have his/her nails clipped WIHTOUT a fuss.
- Your puppy will learn to develop respectful boundaries with people and dogs.
- Your puppy will learn to stand on a grooming table, exposing them to the grooming experience, such as being brushed, nail clipping, and teeth/ear cleaning exercise.
- Your puppy will learn how to successfully adapt to living in a house. This means responding correctly to strangers at the door, lawn mowers, delivery trucks and vacuums! Also your puppy will understand how not to be greedy or pushy while you are eating dinner

Summer is here.... fleas and ticks

Floridians.... keep you pets safe from fleas and ticks especially during the summer months. Ticks can transmit serious diseases (even to humans) and fleas can cause serious skin problems to your dog.

Despite the monthly topical you use on your pets, fleas and ticks are still susseptiable to your pets; especially if your dog is an outdoorsy dog, or your house backs up to dense shrubs / woods / conservation.

Be sure to check your pets after their walks and prior to letting them back into the house. It would also help to check pets daily; regardless of how often or long they stay outside.

Here are some directions on how to remove a tick safey from your pet or yourself
:

The best way to remove a tick is to pull it off gently, leaving the tick and its mouth parts intact. This can be difficult because some ticks cement their mouth parts into the skin. Every effort should be made to remove this cement if it does not come out with the tick. Applying heat, alcohol, petroleum jelly or fingernail polish to an embedded tick is not effective. The following is the recommended procedure:

* Use blunt curved tweezers or a thread.
* Grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible and pull upward with a steady, even pressure.
* Do not twist or jerk the tick because this may cause the mouth parts to detach and remain in the skin.
* You should pull firmly enough to lift up the skin.
* Hold this tension for 3 to 4 minutes and the tick will back out.
* DO NOT squeeze, crush, or puncture the body of the tick because its fluids may contain bacteria.
* To dispose the tick, put it in a plastic cup quarter full of alcohol. Wait for tick to die before disposing of it.

Did you know Guinea Fowl help control, eliminate and prevent from tick infestations?

Cesar fans..... Inside Puppy Mills

Every year, millions of dogs are mass-produced at puppy mills - often packed in tiny wire cages, neglected, dehydrated, dirty and chronically sick - and then sold legally to pet stores throughout the country. In this powerful episode, Cesar sees puppy mill horror and works to rescue and rehabilitate caged pups with the animal rights group Last Chance for Animals. With hidden cameras, LCA operatives spot check Los Angeles county kennels, rescue eleven dogs considered worthless by breeders and learn from Cesar as he teaches them how to immediately rehabilitate the traumatized pups.

Joy's Journey... up for adoption

Here is a cute story from Joy's foster mum... Astrid (Doglando Mum).

Recently she had participated in her first foster experience ever... of two 5 week old puppies, that she raised, nurtured and even successfully potty trained by the time they were 8.5 weeks old. At the time of adoption of the last puppy, she told the "new" family, "I just want you to know I am giving you a piece of my heart..."

Today Astrid emailed me and said "I hope I have a big heart, because when Joy leaves I will be giving away another piece of my heart."

My response to her was for every feeling of emptiness your heart will be filled with even more love, joy and warmth knowing you helped save a life... your heart will always remain big."

And I would tell this to everyone who has found it in themselves to foster a dog and has worked so hard to help them thrive and nourish... to find the dog a forever home, then start all over again with another dog. One may say it gets easier... but I don't know about that.

Here is Joy, ever so gently accepting treats... ENJOY!

Low Cost Spay/Neuter

Did you know vets are not your only option to have your pet spayed/neutered?

Most counties have local shelters through which they provide very inexpensive spay/neuter programs. In addition, some counties also have a local SPCA or Humane Society shelter that provide low cost services.

The difference in cost is quite significant, sometimes saving pet owners well over $100 to a few hundred dollars... it is a shame that our local shelter does a terrible job at promoting these services.

I recently learned about a new site: Friends of Animals that allows visitors to search for animal hospitals that provide low cost spay/neuter services by zip code.

Here is another website that is local to Orlando, FL, which also provides information on low cost spay/neuter services.

Don't forget, University of Doglando offers LOW COST VACCINATIONS once a month.
