Get To Know a Dog Day: Oakley

Today's dog comes all the way from North Carolina and we are very excited to have him here!

Meet Oakley!

Oakley's Story:

About 6 months ago me and my big ol' yellow Lab, Oakley, moved into a new house. A two story house at that, a new experience for an almost 4 year old lab. He had been in 2 story houses before but never lived in one. This caused great joy for the big dog. Running up and down, up and down the stairs all day. Well as we were unpacking Oakley went missing for a little big. I suddenly got suspicious. What was the big dog getting into Then I paused for a second and hear some familiar scratching of paws. I went into the spare bath and there he was, testing out the new shower and tub. My lab loves the water and just wanted to see how he fit in the new spare bath tub.

Here is another story about my "big." The former owners of my house had 2 lab mixes. Well the neighbor to the right of me has two Chihuahua's. One of the lab mixes used to run up and down the fence with the Chihuahua's. Well now that they're gone and Oakley has moved in.... the dogs next door are so confused but they figure hey he looks similar, maybe he will play the game. 6 Months later. Not so much. The little dogs just bark and run up and down the fence, and 95% of the time Oakley just sits there looking at them like they aren't worth his effort. Every once in a blue moon the big old lab gets a burst of energy and intrigue and runs like 2 laps along the fence with the Chihuahua's ...then he's done.

Welcome to another Caught on Doggy Cam Day!

Today's U of D's Caught on Doggy Cam Dog is:
Lilo

Link

Lilo and her owner were caught educating the public to not impulsively buy dogs this holiday season, without fully understanding the commitment and work that goes into it. They were also helping inform the public that pure breeds can also be found through rescue organizations (as opposed to getting them through pet shops and breeders.) Lilo also happens to be a U of D alumni!

Whats your take on people's impulsiveness to buy dogs around the holidays? Let us know in the comment section!

Seriously, why didn't I think of this?!? Ever see people trying to
give their dogs water from a water bottle? Well I was one of them. Now they have this really cool cap that you can place on top of almost any bottle, and it's like a dropper. The BEST part is that you can control the speed by twisting the top of the cap from the bottom base part.

I have two German Shepherds (Wyatt and Dax) and one Dachshund, so we really love it. Although the first time I used it, Tag (my Dachshund) was last for a drink, and ended up with a more of a splash lol.

Have you used this pawduct before? We would love to here about your experience with it in the comments section!

Doggy Tip Thursday: Taking treats politely

Working in an environment with other dogs can be very conducive to achieving positive behaviors fast. During day care at Doglando, dogs get "treat time" throughout the day. During treat time, all the dogs are called in and then expected to sit and wait patiently until either their name is called or the treat is presented to them. Any pushing, shoving, or leaning over is not allowed, and the dog is consequenced simply by that dog missing out on his/her treats.

Even the least food motivated dog will begin to get really excited about treat time, just because everyone else is interested, and the dog who has no patience (does  not know how to sit, takes treats in an inappropriate manner, and pushes over other dogs), will learn in a matter of just a couple sessions, they they will not get anything. Of course, practice sessions (one on one) are helpful to the dog that does not understand the nature of the game; they will improve faster each time.

Finally, it is essential that the handler understands how to present the food reward as well. If the food is presented with it pointing directly to the dog (for him/her to grab) you are enticing the dog to be rude and grab the food out of your hand. We always present the food covered by our fingers (food facing our body, fingers facing the dog) and wait for them to wait politely before we open our hands to give them the reward.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT for you and your dog. Have fun at it.

Do you have a trick you want your dog to learn? Tell us about it here, and we might just show you how to do it on a future Doggy Tips Thursday!

Happy Holidays!

Get to know a Dog Day: OREO

Hey everyone and welcome to our first Get To Know A Dog Day! We are really excited about kicking this thing off and getting to know as many dogs as possible. Todays dog, Oreo, was submitted by one of our readers @golden101. As you know, we LOVE dogs here at the U of D, and nothing pleases us more than hearing great stories about our four legged friends, from their best friend/owner.  So without much delay, meet our first dog.....OREO!

Oreo's Story:

We Flunked Fostering.

"When my friend emailed me that a puppy mill was shutting down and that they needed foster homes for over 80 dogs we agreed to foster one.  The night finally arrived for us to go pick up our foster.  She was so tiny and so sweet.  Her name was Oreo and we fell in love with her immediately.  She was very scared and just wanted to be held.  We think that she had been kept in a kennel for a very long time because her back legs were not very developed.

We realized very soon that we had flunked at fostering and that we had to adopt her.  She is so happy.  She loves to be held and she loves to run.  She has a little bed with a blanket in it and she keeps all of her treasures in her bed.  She has brought so much joy to us and we are very glad that we flunked fostering."

Story told by Oreo's Owner: Kim Nesbitt

University of Doglando: #1 Party School for Dogs!

Hey everyone! My name is Teena and I am the crazy dog lady, also founder and CEO of the University of Doglando. As a dog fanatic, the purpose of this blog is to find other fans with who I can share my silly dog stories with.  I am surrounded by dogs of all kinds, every day at Doglando’s doggy daycare, and I find myself cracking up at the darndest things dogs do, and feel that we can all benefit from a laugh a day, so I thought I would share.

I always appreciate feedback, ideas, and comments, and would love to hear from you, so please feel free to email me, and I may even share your tales as well. I am sure this will evolve over time, but for now, here is the plan for how I see this blog starting off:

Mondays"Doglando's Caught on Doggy Cam": Over the weekend, we will drive around Orlando, looking for people out with their dogs, if you’re caught on doggy cam, you might just find your dog’s photo on Monday's post.

Tuesdays: Tuesdays will be The Darndest Things Dogs Do” day, which will include a variety of  hilarious doggy tales, and it will occasionally switch with "Get To Know a Dog Day" which will feature a bio, pictures, and a story about one of Doglando's cool canines . Also, feel free to send a picture, story, and bio about your dog(s) and you never know....it might just show up on Tuesday's post!

Wednesdays: To help you get over hump day, we will share a Doglando video with you.  Trust me; it will be worth checking in for….. If you appreciate doggy humor!

Thursdays: Get down to business, today’s entries will be based on sharing information on dog food, nutrition, new products in the pet industry, grooming tips, training tips, dog related news from around the world etc.

Friday: Pawduct of the Day. Every Friday we will talk about one of Bark Ave's specialty dog products. Items will include dog food, accessories, treats, toys etc... That item will then be significantly discounted for anyone who wishes to purchase it that day. It will be the best deal on the web!

So hopefully you will find this blog fun, informative, and useful. I can't wait to start sharing with all of you and I hope you will share your canine experiences with me too!
